Kathy Potts, the Baby Fairy was created on January 25, 2003, in honor of the birth of my friend’s son, Zander.

On Friday, January 24, 2003, around 11p.m. I received a phone call from my friend Rosie. She was past the delivery due date for the birth of her 5th son. She had been stressing all week, and had called to tell me how her doctor’s appointment the day before had gone. She said that they would have to consider inducing labor the next week if she didn’t have the baby natrually by Monday.

At the end of our phone conversation, I told her to “Think happy thoughts” that the baby would come soon. With some static on the phone connection she misunderstood me and thought I said Kathy Potts and exclamed, “who’s Kathy Potts?!” We jokingly concluded that Kathy Potts must be the Baby Fairy. Surely enough, I received a phone call early the next morning around 6a.m.! Baby Zander had been born in the wee hours of the morning.

Before going to visit her in the hospital I drew the original illustration of Kathy Potts and gave it to her and Zander. The Kathy Potts character has since gone through several revisions.
